Oh Deer

We took a walk in Rosehill Cemetery. I've never casually walked through a cemetery where I wasn't visiting anyone. This cemetery was full of headstones that stand up. At Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, where my grandfather is buried, those headstones are mostly plates on the ground. So, it was interesting to see family plots from the 1800s.

Meredith spotted two deer, a mom and its baby running across the cemetery. Let me repeat that: a doe and a fawn were crossing the cemetery. I have no idea where those deer came from. I saw deer randomly hanging out in Ashland, Oregon, but we were adjacent to the woods. This cemetery was in the city of Chicago. Where did they come from?

We followed them because I felt like they wanted us to. I imagined Harry Potter chasing the doe patronous in the middle of the night. Here we were, walking in a cemetery, following two wild animals. We followed them to a fence and they disappeared in the brush.

I looked at Google Maps and saw a park on the other side of the fence. Could that be where they went? Also, a park next to a cemetery, was that intentional?

It turns out the park was a nature preserve. It had many trees, bushes, flowers, butterflies, bees, dragonflies and a few animals. The paths were paved and it felt like such a hidden gem. This is something that should be on the list of Free Things to do in Chicago.

We sat by the pond for a bit. There we saw a heron. Also while there, I got more bug bites. My poor legs are getting devoured.

We circled the park and never found the deer. There's a fence between the cemetery and the nature park, so I don't think they crossed there. The mystery of their whereabouts and their origin is still unsolved. Nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody knows!
